Dear Parents,

I look forward to meeting you at Open House on Thursday, August 29,2019 from 6:45-7:30 pm in room 5.

Curriculum Night is for parents only!

*You may bring a check made out to Valley Vista School for $5.00 in an envelope marked with your child's name for a one year subscription to Weekly Reader.  You may also bring a separate check for their first grade school fee of $36.00 also made out to Valley Vista School or through PayForIt.net .

Welcome to your child’s first grade Open House at Valley Vista!  Please take time to look around the room and familiarize yourself with the school.  This way you will have a better understanding of your child’s first grade experience.

In our reading program we use  Houghton Mifflin Harcourt /Journeys.  This is a comprehensive program to help all students become fluent lifelong readers.  The program features oral language, phonological awareness, fine literature, comprehension, vocabulary, and writing.

The math program uses the My Math! workbook by McGraw Hill.

 I. Operaitons and Algebraic Thinking- additon and subtraction concepts, strategies, and relationships

II. Number and Operations in Base Ten-place value & two digit addition and subtraction

III.Measurement and Data- Organize and use graphs, Measurement, & Time

IIII.Geometry-  2-dimensional shapes and equal shares & 3-dimensional shapes

*  During the second semester the children will be taking math fact time tests to help strengthen their knowledge of the basic math facts 1-10.

The children will be learning the Zanner-Bloser method of handwriting.  Please encourage your child to hold their pencil correctly and to form letters from the top to the bottom (see example at the end).

Homework:  The children will bring home  math worksheets to review and practice the math concepts at home.  They will be asked to read and practice math facts.  Fudations homework which correlates with the phonics program.

RED= Read Every Day  books at their "Just Right Level" from leveled book tubs. The children will take home a book daily to be read 3 times to an adult who will then sign off on a chart. The student will return the book to school and select a new book from their tub. I will periodically complete a DRA (directed reading assessment) to move the students to a new tub.  These books should be easy for them to read to foster the joy of reading and not to frustrate the reader.

Report cards are used to show the progress your child is making.  Report cards are sent home at the end of each quarter: October, January, March, and June.  Your child's progress may be viewed on Progress Book daily.

Conferences will be held on Thursday, November 14  from 4:30 - 7:30 p.m.  and Thursday, November 21 from 4:30-7:30 p.m.  A conference request will be sent home by the teacher to the parents informing you of your conference time.  I will try to personally speak with each child’s parent sometime during the school year.

Thank you, for coming to open house tonight !

 Sincerely,  Mrs. Radtke
